John Martin’s work at Loganberry Annex Gallery in Shaker Heights merges Martin’s gestural figures with the abstract and extemporaneous process of monoprinting. Martin utilizes strength gained from years of figurative drawing as a springboard into the colorful and intuitive environment of the monoprint. Although the whole show is figurative, some pieces deceive more than others and are only recognizable as such upon close observation. This subtle nod to color field and the post war abstractionists seems right at home in the Loganberry Annex Gallery, as right next door one can see towering stacks of wonderful books, both old and new. Vibrant colors and bold marks contrast sharply with the delicate nature of both imagery and emotion. The unabashedly simple title fits since the show does not hide any content or theories. Martin celebrates humanness through art. Experience a taste of his work. Go check out New Works, on display until January 31st.
